Congratulations to Archer Morgan, NY-based EnCorps Fellow and the recipient of the 2024 Arthur Housinger Memorial Scholarship.
Established in 2020, this scholarship honors the memory of Arthur Housinger, an EnCorps Fellow who transitioned from a successful career in the software industry to teaching in underserved schools in the Bay Area. Arthur’s commitment to inspiring students and building a strong community among EnCorps Fellows lives on through recipients like Archer.
Similarly to Arthur Housinger, Archer transitioned to teaching after a successful career as a software engineer. Archer worked for Al Board and Microsoft as well as volunteered as a tutor with Mathnasium and was a Computer Science tutor at the University of Arizona.
As an EnCorps Fellow, Archer was a volunteer guest teacher at Dock Street for STEAM Studies in Brooklyn, NY in an 8th grade Math classroom.
“The chop-wood-carry-water aspect of showing up every day and providing a high quality classroom experience to the students who need it the most will be the fuel for my life and career.” explains Archer.
Archer was recently accepted to the NYC Teaching Fellows residency program. He is on track to begin teaching in the fall with his Transitional B certification while completing his teacher preparation program to earn his Initial Certification in Math 7-12.
Archer expresses his deep gratitude to the Housingers for the scholarship.
About the Arthur Housinger Memorial Scholarship
The Arthur Housinger Memorial Scholarship ensures that Arthur’s legacy, light and dedication to STEM education and his EnCorps Fellow community continue. After over two decades working in the software industry at top companies, Arthur turned his sights towards teaching in some of the most underserved schools in the Bay Area, to help disadvantaged students achieve everything that they can, and inspire excitement and joy for math and computer science.
Art was known for his kindness, generosity, openness and thoughtfulness. He was a community-builder and convener among his peers, the center of many circles of friends and the organizer for most. The $3,000 Arthur Housinger Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually to a Fellow who displays the same spirit of friendship, fellowship and community among the EnCorps Fellows and who shows a particular interest in teaching math and science.
