As a shifting educational landscape encourages us to take a deep look at our values, it is clear that we need to reinvigorate our commitment to investing in our society’s future.
At EnCorps, we know that supporting STEM education is one of the most powerful levers for change, from impacting technological breakthroughs to ensuring a healthy environment for generations to come.
Supporting Our Society
EnCorps’ programs focus on preparing the next generation of excellent STEM educators. These transitional subject experts will powerfully impact today’s students who will shape our shared tomorrow.
The Numbers
Even with the constriction many fields have experienced, careers in STEM fields are expected to continue to grow more than other areas in the next decade. STEM education is the foundation of our economy:
- STEM fields are predicted to grow by 8.1% by 2034.
- This is more than double the 3.1% growth prediction for careers overall.
- Professionals in STEM-related occupations support 69% of the US GDP.
- 2 out of every 3 professionals work in STEM-inclusive occupations.
Students with a strong STEM background are more prepared for the future of work, but to ensure quality STEM education, we need prepared and committed teachers, and the demand far outpaces the supply.
The Need
Even though the benefits of having a workplace trained in STEM are clear, US students are struggling with scores well behind their global peers in these vital areas. One of the most pressing concerns is the lack of qualified teachers. Large numbers of teachers have left the profession since the pandemic. California alone will require over 3,000 additional math and science teachers each year for the next 10 years to meet demand.
Supporting our STEM Educators
EnCorps partners with trained STEM professionals to create tutoring and teacher training opportunities. This brings professionals straight into the classrooms that need them most. By working with career-changing professionals who are exploring the move to teaching, we can partner with the most qualified potential teachers to provide training and support for their transition.
Linchpin Educators
Not only are our teachers professional subject experts, but they are also the future leaders of education. EnCorps is also a highly selective program, so students will be working with teachers who are highly educated, with 60% holding a Master’s or Ph.D.
Middle and high school teachers are now set up to have incredible effects on their students’ futures by providing:
- Subject knowledge – Topic experts impart a deep understanding of topics, not rote memorization to pass tests.
- Passion – Many professionals cite one or two teachers who fueled their subject love before going on to attain career success.
- Commitment – EnCorps teachers stay in the teaching profession much longer than other teachers (73% 5-yr retention rate compared with 50%), ensuring continuity and momentum for their departments.
By supporting STEM professionals in their transition to classroom teachers, EnCorp is building the next generation of educational leaders and rising STEM professionals.
